Dubstep Fever

I’ve been recently addicted to the relatively new dance genre of Dubstep. For those of you who are not familiar, think of old-school drum & bass + deep-African-chanting-borderline-meditative beats + occasional heavy metal rhythms, its kinda hard to put into words…except that it is devastatingly sick!!

I’m really happy that it has been recognized by mainstream dance media for the last year or so (listen to this essential mix by Benga on BBC – available ’till Sunday) – by the way, you must download his track with Coki, called “Night” …there are a couple mixes out there, but I still love the original~ he has to be currently one of the most talented producers!!

But where can I hear a good Dubstep session in NYC?

This week’s EM from Radio One features one of the popular names behind recent big tracks – Dutch DJ/Producer – Fedde Le Grand.

He was an unknown (at least to the rest of the world) ’till about 2, 3 years ago, and with that track, had us put ours hands up to a city that we mostly don’t really care for (…well maybe not since “8 Mile” . Who knew he was able to succeed with another (if not cheesier) commercial track with Ida Corr – “Let me think about it” – though it kinda does have a catchy tune, I gotta admit.

Anyways, I was pleasantly surprised with this EM set, as it featured an electro theme that seemed foreign when compared to his chart-topping singles. As long as you can get over the whole “bleep-bleep” thing (or a bit of calculator music as I call it), it was actually a pretty refreshing electro set. In this case, the second hour is considerably better; but that’s the way it is for these sets, we just gotta be patient and be optimistic that something will eventually happen
